Are Building Controls and Energy Management Systems Expensive?

The answer is based on the scope of control and monitoring the customer requires. It could be as simple as monitoring a piece of equipment and send a notification in the event of an alarm. When I choose a vendor/provider am I stuck with them for life?

BMS has come a long way from the 1980's. Systems are designed to favor the client. In other words, previously when you installed a BMS on your site to change your BMS provider that was quite an expensive endeavor, because you were required to remove all of the original equipment and use the new provider's equipment that would always involve a huge capital cost. Today you can keep the old vendor's equipment and use the new vendor's software. This favors the customer since this means they can change an under performing vendor without any significant cost to them.

Can a BMS be used in a residential environment?

A BMS can be used in a residential or commercial environment but the market has been flooded with very inexpensive plug and play devices for the home. A BMS is more tailored for Commercial buildings since each building is unique in its own right and the integrator would have to sit down with the building owner and facility manager to determine the needs of the specific building.
